Riding to Đường Lâm Ancient Village is one of the most popular day trips from Hanoi by motorbike: the village lies in the Sơn Tây area, about 45 km from the city centre. You can follow Highway 32 through Nhổn, Trạm Trôi and Phùng, or use the service roads alongside Thăng Long Boulevard before turning towards Sơn Tây. The key is to stay in lanes where motorbikes are allowed, prepare fuel, documents and rest stops, and confirm with your rental company that a longer trip is fine. This guide covers the routes, safety tips and what to know before you arrive.
Where is Đường Lâm and why go?
Table of contents20
According to VietnamPlus (May 2024), Đường Lâm Ancient Village is about 45 km from central Hanoi and still has 956 traditional houses, along with the classic features of a northern Vietnamese village: the village gate, the banyan tree, the water landing and the communal courtyard. Đường Lâm is also associated with two historical figures, Phùng Hưng and Ngô Quyền. Its laterite houses, narrow lanes and slow rhythm make it a favourite weekend escape.
A note on maps: in 2025 Hanoi abolished its district and town level and reorganised wards and communes, so administrative names in older guides may no longer match. When searching, look for “Đường Lâm Ancient Village” or landmarks such as the Mông Phụ village gate.
Before you go: three things to do
- Confirm where your rental bike may go: the round trip is close to 100 km, so ask your rental company whether the bike may be taken that far and what support is available if it breaks down. See our guide to confirming roadside support coverage.
- Check fuel and condition: fill the tank before leaving the city and check tyres, brakes and lights. See also checking the fuel level at pickup.
- Check the weather and your return time: avoid riding back in the dark on busy highways with trucks; if heavy rain is forecast, consider postponing.
Popular routes from the Old Quarter
Route 1: Highway 32 (Nhổn – Trạm Trôi – Phùng – Sơn Tây)
From the Old Quarter, head towards Cầu Giấy and follow Xuân Thủy and Hồ Tùng Mậu out towards Nhổn, then continue on Highway 32 through Trạm Trôi and Phùng to Sơn Tây. From central Sơn Tây, follow the signs to Đường Lâm Ancient Village. This is the traditional route: easy to understand, with plenty of petrol stations and roadside cafés.
The downside is that it passes through many towns and residential areas, carries trucks and coaches and can be congested at rush hour. Keep to the right-hand lane, leave a good gap, watch for vehicles joining from both sides and never overtake recklessly where there is a solid median.
Route 2: Thăng Long Boulevard service roads, then towards Sơn Tây
Thăng Long Boulevard is the main westbound axis, but its high-speed main carriageway is not for motorbikes; riders must use the parallel service roads on either side, as signed. From the service roads you can head towards Hòa Lạc and then follow the signs onto roads leading to Sơn Tây. Parts of this route are less crowded, but you need to read the signs carefully at junctions so you do not drift into a lane where motorbikes are banned.
If you are unsure about the turns, choose Highway 32 for simplicity. Never ride a motorbike onto an expressway or the main lanes of a motorbike-free road, even if your phone map suggests it.
Combined option: one way out, another way back
Many riders take Highway 32 in the morning while they are fresh and return via the Thăng Long Boulevard service roads for a change of scenery, or the other way round. Whichever you choose, save the route in advance and only check your phone when stopped somewhere safe.
Travel time and rest stops
For roughly 45 km, the ride usually takes between about 1 hour 15 minutes and 2 hours, depending on the route, traffic and how often you stop. Take at least one break on the way: drink water, stretch and check the bike again. Riding too long without a pause leads to fatigue and lapses in concentration, especially in hot sun.
Arriving in the village: tickets, parking and getting around
The heritage site charges an entrance fee. According to a 2026 price list compiled by Lữ hành Việt Nam and updated in June 2026, tickets are 20,000 VND for adults and 10,000 VND for children; this is a compiled source, so check the price posted at the ticket point. The village is full of narrow lanes and private homes, so the best approach is to park at a ticketed parking point or at the place you are visiting and explore on foot or by bicycle.
When riding inside the village, slow right down, give way to pedestrians, avoid unnecessary horn use and never leave your bike blocking someone’s gate. Many old houses are lived in, so ask before entering or taking photos.
VietnamPlus also reported that from May 2024 the village held an “Ancient Village Night” programme every Saturday evening. That schedule may have changed; if you plan to stay into the evening, check beforehand and think carefully about riding back to Hanoi after dark.
Route comparison
| Route | Advantages | Drawbacks | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Highway 32 (Nhổn – Trạm Trôi – Phùng – Sơn Tây) | Easy to follow, many fuel stops and cafés | Through many towns, trucks, congestion | Keep right, keep your distance |
| Thăng Long Boulevard service roads | Less crowded in places | Complex junctions, easy to pick the wrong lane | Never enter the main lanes banned for motorbikes |
| One way out, another way back | Change of scenery, flexible return | Requires preparing both routes | Save both routes in advance |
Pre-ride checklist
- A licence valid for your bike, plus registration papers or your rental contract; confirm longer trips are allowed.
- Your rental company’s support phone number.
- A full tank and checked tyres, brakes, lights and horn.
- A proper helmet, a sun-protective jacket, a compact rain poncho and gloves.
- Water, sunscreen and small cash.
- Your route saved in advance and a charged phone or power bank.
- No alcohol before or during the ride.
Riding etiquette outside the city
Once you leave the urban area, traffic changes character. Trucks and coaches travel faster, farm vehicles and bicycles share the edge of the road, and children or animals may step out from village lanes. Use your horn briefly to signal when overtaking, never squeeze between a truck and the kerb, and slow down through market areas and school zones. If a section of road is under repair, follow the temporary signs and give workers plenty of room. Riding calmly and predictably is the best way to make the 45 km feel like part of the trip rather than a chore.
Riding back after dark
If you plan to stay for the weekend evening programme in the village (a Vietnamplus report from 7 May 2024 mentions a Saturday-night event called “Đêm làng cổ”, or “night at the ancient village”), treat the ride back to Hanoi as a separate trip. Around 45 km in the dark feels longer than it looks on the map, especially after a full day on foot between laterite walls and courtyard houses.
- Check the headlight, tail light and indicators before you leave the parking area.
- Fill the tank around Sơn Tây before setting off rather than waiting for the gauge to drop low.
- Wear something light-coloured or reflective; QL32 still carries plenty of trucks and coaches in the evening.
- If your eyes feel heavy, stop for 10–15 minutes instead of pushing through in one go.
- Keep your phone charged and your rental contact saved, so you can call for help if something goes wrong on the way back.
Event schedules can change with the season, so confirm with the site management board or local residents before deciding to stay late. If the answer is uncertain, an afternoon return in daylight is the calmer choice, and you can always come back for the evening on another weekend.
