Exploring Long Biên by motorbike: a half-day plan in Hanoi

A flexible half-day motorbike itinerary around Long Biên, Hanoi: Ngọc Lâm, Bồ Đề, safe views of Long Biên Bridge, lawful parking and time for a break.

10 min read

A half-day motorbike outing in Long Biên offers a look at everyday Hanoi on the east bank of the Red River. Rather than spending four hours racing between attractions, choose two or three nearby stops: a neighbourhood walk around Ngọc Lâm, a café or meal in Bồ Đề, and—if safe access is available—a public viewpoint of historic Long Biên Bridge. The motorbike is useful for getting between places, but parking legally and exploring on foot is often the most rewarding part. This plan is flexible, not a timed guided tour.

1. Long Biên is not just the famous bridge

Table of contents27

The name Long Biên describes both a historic railway-and-road bridge spanning the Red River and a much larger area on Hanoi’s eastern side. A café in Ngọc Lâm, a rental business on Nguyễn Văn Cừ and a viewpoint near the bridge are different destinations with different approaches. Set exact addresses rather than navigating to the first map pin labelled ‘Long Bien’. For a short visit, decide whether you want a local neighbourhood experience, bridge scenery or a particular meeting place. Trying to include all the things mentioned in travel blogs can lead to more time spent in traffic than actually enjoying the area.

2. What can you realistically do in four hours?

A comfortable outline is arrival and lawful parking, a slow walk and refreshments near Ngọc Lâm or Bồ Đề, an optional safe look towards Long Biên Bridge, and an unhurried return. The order depends on your starting location: someone already staying east of the river has more sightseeing time than a visitor crossing from Hoàn Kiếm. Four hours is a planning allowance rather than a guaranteed total. If the bridge approach is congested or public viewing access is unclear, skip that stop instead of chasing a photograph. There is no requirement to complete a particular distance or route.

3. Check your licence, motorcycle and helmet

Confirm that your licence and other required documents allow you to ride the specific vehicle in Vietnam. International visitors should not assume any overseas licence automatically qualifies them. Check the brakes, tyres, mirrors, fuel, lights, indicators and the helmet fit before leaving. Keep valuables secured and save the contact details of the company that provided a rental bike. If you are uncomfortable in dense urban traffic, reach Long Biên by taxi, bus or another suitable service and walk in your chosen area. A half-day visit should not involve taking legal or physical risks just to use a motorbike.

4. Choose a bridge according to where you start

Visitors leaving the Old Quarter or Hoàn Kiếm may consider Long Biên Bridge or Chương Dương Bridge, depending on the current vehicle rules and exact destination. People approaching from more southerly central areas may evaluate Vĩnh Tuy, while other starting points call for different routes. No one crossing is reliably the quickest for everyone at every hour. Use current navigation as a starting point, but obey signs, lane markings, barriers and traffic officers. If an approach is closed for works, use the legal diversion rather than following outdated turn-by-turn advice. Review the final approach to your chosen street before setting off.

5. The historic bridge and the central flyover are different structures

Historic Long Biên Bridge crosses the Red River. The central Long Biên interchange flyover is a separate road structure on the eastern side, and its traffic restrictions can differ. During works announced in 2026, authorities used a diversion sending motorbikes along parallel roads below the interchange. Do not assume that news of the old bridge reopening makes every inland flyover ramp available. In areas with multilevel roads, check the vehicle-category signs and follow the designated lower route where necessary. Never enter an elevated road or ramp marked as prohibited to motorcycles, even if the navigation app treats it as a shortcut.

6. Arrive in Ngọc Lâm with a specific destination

Ngọc Lâm is an active neighbourhood of streets, shops, cafés and residential lanes, not a continuous pedestrian attraction. Choose a suitable business or meeting point with a confirmed address, then use permitted walking areas to appreciate local life. Respect people entering homes and shops, and avoid stepping into moving traffic to take photos. Some streets have dividers or one-way rules, so the final turn may differ from what a straight-line map suggests. If you need to call a friend or check a menu, stop legally and do it while stationary. A small neighbourhood observation is often more memorable than trying to see ten landmarks at once.

7. Parking is a real part of the itinerary

Online parking markers can be outdated or full; they do not guarantee that an operator is licensed or currently accepting motorcycles. Look for a clearly managed facility, check the posted fee, the ticket arrangement and the latest collection time. Photograph the entrance and keep the ticket with you. Do not park on pavements, across residential gates or beside emergency access, even if another rider has stopped there. If using a rental bike, understand whether the operator expects keys and whether your rental contract permits handing them over. When there is no lawful parking, change your stop rather than forcing an improvised solution.

8. Add a relaxed break in Bồ Đề

The Bồ Đề area connects with Nguyễn Văn Cừ and nearby local streets. It works well for a café, light meal or meeting without insisting on a specific supposedly famous business. Check your chosen venue’s address, menu, current hours and parking instructions before arriving. When exploring residential streets, keep noise low and do not block people’s entrances. With a short itinerary it is better to sit for a while, drink water and talk than to keep moving the motorbike a few hundred metres for the next photograph. This is a local urban experience, so approach it with the same consideration you would in someone’s home neighbourhood.

9. A bridge view must be from a genuinely permitted place

Long Biên Bridge is among Hanoi’s most recognisable historic structures. However, a photograph is not a reason to stop a motorbike in a live bridge lane, walk along railway tracks or climb onto steelwork. If you want a view, verify where lawful parking and publicly permitted walking access are actually available on the side you approach. Riverbank areas may involve private land, flood conditions or temporary closures. The guide does not promise a particular viewpoint will always be accessible. If you cannot identify a safe public spot, skip the photo stop and spend that time enjoying the neighbourhood instead.

10. What the bridge reopening announcement actually says

Hanoi’s official notice said motorbikes, non-motorised vehicles and pedestrians could resume travel on the authorised parts of historic Long Biên Bridge from 28 May 2026 after repairs. That announcement describes the traffic arrangement at a particular date, not permanent permission to park or a guarantee that later maintenance will never occur. Check on-site signs before entering any bridge. Keep an appropriate speed and do not film while riding. The railway space remains a separate safety concern. If a new diversion is in place, follow it even if an older article says the bridge has reopened.

11. A flexible four-hour timetable

For planning, allow roughly 30–45 minutes to arrive and leave the bike legally, 45–60 minutes around Ngọc Lâm, 30–45 minutes for a drink or meal, another 45–60 minutes for an optional permitted bridge viewpoint, and the remaining time to retrieve the bike and depart. These are not measured travel times or business opening hours. Queues, weather, bridge congestion and your original location can change the sequence. If a rental return is due, reserve additional time for the actual journey back to the provider. It is wiser to remove an optional stop than to rush the final part of a short outing.

12. If you would rather focus on food and local streets

You can spend the entire half day around one or two streets in Ngọc Lâm or Bồ Đề, choosing a venue with a verified address and transparent menu. It is not necessary to label a random restaurant as a celebrated local speciality without evidence. If the weather is too hot or a bridge approach is busy, a calm meal and a short walk may be much more enjoyable. Keep pedestrian routes clear and watch for motorcycles emerging from alleys. A successful visit is one in which you discover something about the area and return safely, not one in which you complete the longest checklist.

13. Why Bát Tràng usually deserves its own itinerary

Bát Tràng pottery village is another worthwhile destination on the eastern side of Hanoi, but visiting it properly can take time for travel, parking, browsing and an optional workshop. Combining it with Ngọc Lâm, Bồ Đề and historic Long Biên Bridge in just four hours risks turning the outing into a race. If pottery is your main interest, give Bát Tràng a separate trip and drop several stops from this plan. Do not mistake a mapping app’s distance estimate for a guaranteed travel duration. The most useful half-day schedule has one clear focus and enough space to adapt if roads or activities take longer than expected.

14. Morning, afternoon and changing weather

Morning may be comfortable for a walk before the hottest hours, while late afternoon can offer an interesting view of daily routines and changing light over the river. Neither option guarantees pleasant weather or a perfect sunset. River crossings can be exposed to wind, traffic queues and wet road markings; poor visibility increases the risk for riders. Check the forecast and current road notices, then postpone or shorten the trip if conditions become unsafe. Do not speed to catch the fading daylight. An optional viewpoint can be dropped without harming the quality of the neighbourhood visit.

15. Budget for more than fuel

Costs may include fuel, legitimate parking, drinks or a meal, and optional activities offered by individual businesses. There is no single reliable total for all Long Biên visits, and this guide does not invent parking charges or attraction fees. Look at posted tariffs and menus, and ask the operator how any time-based parking fee works. When the motorbike is rented, the rental price, deposit, return hour, support arrangements and delivery conditions depend on the contract with your actual provider. Do not apply one brand’s terms to another. Keeping the receipt and the parking ticket can help avoid confusion when you collect the vehicle.

16. Travelling with children or people who prefer shorter walks

Long Biên’s ordinary streets can have narrow footways, parked vehicles and motorcycles leaving side alleys. Pick a small number of stops and check that there is somewhere to sit, drink water and use a toilet if needed. All vehicle occupants must follow the applicable passenger and helmet rules; do not modify a rented scooter with improvised seating. If someone in the group is not legally entitled or comfortable riding, arrange a suitable alternative. A short enjoyable walk and a meal may be the best itinerary for them. The point is an experience that works for the whole group, not a target number of kilometres.

17. Collect the motorbike and leave without rushing

Return to the correct parking facility within its collection hours and produce the ticket. Before riding away, check the registration plate, mirrors, tyres, keys, storage compartment and personal belongings. If you find a problem, document it and speak to the attendant while still on site; follow your rental agreement where relevant. Put your helmet on and review the return route while stationary. One-way streets may make the departure route different from arrival. Do not attempt an abrupt U-turn near a bridge or enter a prohibited elevated ramp because the clock is running. An unhurried departure is part of the outing.

If you need to decide which bridge or street is appropriate, read the route guide to Long Biên by motorbike. If you need to know how to assess a parking operator and keep the vehicle secure, see the Long Biên parking checklist. Those pages cover transport and parking in detail; this article is about arranging a satisfying half day without spending it all on the road.
