Rental Terms

The general rules every Mr Tú rental agreement includes: licence, identity check, deposit, hand-over, use of the bike, fines, damage and return.

Model examples explain vehicle categories. Confirm the actual vehicle, price, deposit, documents, insurance and handover conditions with Mr Tú for your particular request before booking.

These are the general rules that apply to every motorbike rental from Mr Tú. Your written rental agreement confirms them, together with the details of your own rental: the price, deposit, rental period, the bike’s condition and any delivery cost.

Last updated: 25 October 2026. If anything on this page differs from your signed rental agreement, the agreement prevails.

Who can rent and ride

Table of contents13
  • A valid licence. Every rider needs a licence that is valid in Vietnam for the bike’s class: a Vietnamese licence, or an International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention carried together with your national licence. Class A1 is for motorcycles up to 125 cc; anything above that needs class A.
  • Minimum age. Motorcycle riders must be at least 18.
  • Car licences don’t count. A licence that covers only cars does not cover motorcycles.
  • Every rider counts. If someone else will ride the bike during your rental, tell Mr Tú before you book. The same licence rules apply to them.

The licence rules are explained in more detail in our guide on how to rent a motorbike in Hanoi. This is general information, not legal advice.

Identity check

We check an identity document (for example your passport) and your licence documents for the rental agreement. The deposit is a separate matter: its form, for example cash, is agreed lawfully with you before you book.

Deposit

  • The deposit is separate from the rental price.
  • Its amount depends on the model and is confirmed before you book. You can see the current figures on our prices page.
  • It is refunded when you return the bike and have checked it together, as set out in your rental agreement.
  • If there is damage, or an amount is still owed under the agreement, this is settled as your agreement sets out.

Hand-over: checking the bike together

Before you ride away, you and Mr Tú inspect the brakes, tyres, lights, horn and mirrors together and record the fuel level. The bike’s condition, including any existing marks, is photographed and noted in the agreement. We recommend you take your own photos too. Our checklist for picking up a rental motorbike walks you through each step.

Fuel

We record the fuel level when you collect the bike and again when you bring it back. Return it with the fuel level set out in your agreement. Fuel you use during the rental is yours to pay for.

Using the bike

During your rental, you agree to:

  • wear a helmet that meets Vietnam’s national standard, with the strap fastened, and make sure any passenger does the same;
  • follow Vietnamese traffic law, and never ride after drinking alcohol;
  • let only yourself and the riders agreed with Mr Tú ride the bike: no subletting, renting out or lending it to anyone else;
  • never use the bike for racing, stunts or any illegal purpose, such as carrying prohibited goods;
  • ride only where agreed: if you plan to leave Hanoi, ask Mr Tú before you book, because where the bike may go is part of the written agreement;
  • park responsibly, in attended paid parking where possible, and look after the key.

Traffic fines

Traffic fines incurred during your rental are your responsibility as the renter. This includes fines that are notified after you have returned the bike, for an offence committed during your rental.

Breakdowns, accidents and theft

If something goes wrong:

  1. Stay safe. Move yourself, and the bike if you can, out of the traffic.
  2. Call for help when needed. The police number is 113 and the ambulance number is 115.
  3. Tell Mr Tú as soon as you can. Say what happened and where you are, and take photos.
  4. Don’t repair the bike without agreement. Any repair is agreed with Mr Tú first, as your agreement sets out.

If the bike is stolen, report it to the police and tell Mr Tú straight away.

Damage

If the bike is damaged during your rental, the cost is assessed fairly, on the actual damage, as set out in your rental agreement. This is why the photos and notes from the hand-over matter: they record the bike’s condition before your rental began.

Insurance

Model examples explain vehicle categories. Confirm the actual vehicle, price, deposit, documents, insurance and handover conditions with Mr Tú for your particular request before booking.

Returning the bike

  • Return the bike at the time and place agreed in writing.
  • Need more time? Ask Mr Tú before your return time. An extension depends on availability, and the new date and price are confirmed with you.
  • Late and early returns are handled as your agreement sets out. Please tell Mr Tú as soon as your plans change.
  • At return, you check the bike together again, the fuel level is noted, and the deposit is refunded under the agreement.

Monthly and longer rentals

For monthly and other long rentals, who looks after servicing and maintenance during the rental is set out in your rental agreement. See monthly motorbike rental in Hanoi for how renting by the month works.

Your signed agreement comes first

This page is a general summary. Your signed rental agreement sets out the details that apply to you, and where the two differ, the agreement prevails. If anything is unclear, ask Mr Tú before you sign.

Check your own licence: older Vietnamese licences and recognition under international agreements may have different scopes from the newer class labels. Check the actual document, issue date and vehicle against the 2026 consolidated Vietnamese road traffic law. A class name alone does not settle every case.
