Trịnh Công Sơn Walking Street: planning a half-day motorbike visit

A half-day motorbike plan for the Trịnh Công Sơn walking street area: a weekend late afternoon or an early lotus-season morning, combined with West Lake, Trấn Quốc Pagoda and Phủ Tây Hồ, with one-stop parking and night-riding tips.

7 min read

Planning a half-day motorbike visit to Trịnh Công Sơn Walking Street works best if you treat it as one stop on a loop around West Lake rather than a there-and-back ride. The area lies in Nhật Tân on the northern side of West Lake, between lane 612 Lạc Long Quân and lane 431 Âu Cơ, beside the lotus ponds and Hồ Tây Water Park. Because the walking-street format has changed several times, this guide offers two flexible plans, a weekend late afternoon and an early lotus-season morning, with advice on parking once, strolling at your own pace and riding home safely.

What to know before you plan

Table of contents23

According to published reports, the Trịnh Công Sơn pedestrian space opened in 2017 on Friday to Sunday evenings (Tiền Phong), reopened in May 2022 on Saturdays and Sundays (Kinh tế & Đô thị), was paused in February 2023 and in November 2023 was reported to have become a creative cultural space open at weekends (Tiền Phong). We have not been able to verify a fixed schedule for 2026.

So keep your plan flexible. If there is an event that weekend, enjoy the music and stalls; if not, the lotus ponds and the roads along West Lake still make for a pleasant, relaxed outing. Before you go, check the local ward’s announcements or local news.

Suggested stops

The Trịnh Công Sơn space and the lotus ponds

This is the heart of the trip. When there is an event, the area usually hosts performances and cultural and food stalls; when there is not, you can stroll around the lotus ponds, especially in the flowering season. Park once and explore on foot.

The West Lake shore along Lạc Long Quân

Lạc Long Quân runs along the western and northern shores of West Lake, linking the Bưởi area with Nhật Tân. Riding it slowly reveals plenty of lovely lake views, but there are also many small junctions and vehicles pulling out of lanes, so only stop where it is allowed.

Trấn Quốc Pagoda and Thanh Niên road

Set on Thanh Niên road between West Lake and Trúc Bạch Lake, Trấn Quốc Pagoda is a classic stop on the way from the Old Quarter to West Lake. Dress modestly, keep your voice down and check opening times on site.

Phủ Tây Hồ

Phủ Tây Hồ sits on a spit of land jutting into the lake, reached via Đặng Thai Mai street. It is very crowded on the 1st and 15th of the lunar month; ordinary days are calmer and suit a morning visit.

The Quảng Bá flower market area

On an early-morning plan you can also pass by the Quảng Bá flower market area at the start of Âu Cơ. The market is liveliest at night and before dawn; during the day it is mostly flower shops.

Plan A: weekend late afternoon (about 15:00–20:00)

  • 15:00–15:30: ride from the Old Quarter via Quán Thánh and Thanh Niên; stop briefly at Trấn Quốc Pagoda if it is still open.
  • 15:30–16:15: loop around the lake via Thụy Khuê and Lạc Long Quân, riding slowly to enjoy the views; only stop at proper parking points.
  • 16:15–16:30: arrive at the lane 612 Lạc Long Quân area and park at an attended point that issues tickets.
  • 16:30–18:30: walk around the lotus ponds, watch the programme if there is an event and take photos at sunset.
  • 18:30–19:30: dinner nearby, at a place with parking or within walking distance of where you parked.
  • 19:30–20:00: collect your bike and ride back via Lạc Long Quân – Thụy Khuê – Thanh Niên; lights on, ride slowly and avoid the Âu Cơ service roads if you are not familiar with them.

Plan B: early lotus-season morning (about 6:00–10:30)

  • 6:00–6:30: leave the Old Quarter via Thanh Niên – Thụy Khuê – Lạc Long Quân while the roads are still quiet.
  • 6:30–8:00: park and stroll around the lotus ponds while it is cool and the light is soft.
  • 8:00–8:45: breakfast nearby at a place with parking.
  • 8:45–9:45: ride to Phủ Tây Hồ via Xuân Diệu and Đặng Thai Mai, park once and look around.
  • 9:45–10:30: a lakeside coffee or ride back to the Old Quarter before the heat builds.

Plan B suits photographers and anyone who wants to avoid crowds. Lotus season usually falls in summer; ask locals or follow local news to find out whether the flowers are in full bloom.

Parking strategy: once per stop

The principle is to park once at each stop and explore on foot, rather than moving your bike from spot to spot. The lane 612 Lạc Long Quân side is usually easier to reach by motorbike. Do not park on the Âu Cơ service roads: under the plan in force since 22 September 2024, reported by a Vietnamese legal news site, stopping and parking are banned on both sides. Parking options are covered in detail in our guide to Trịnh Công Sơn Walking Street parking and access.

On cost, VnExpress reports that from 15 October 2026 the motorbike fee at state-funded on-street and pavement parking points in Hanoi is 10,000 VND per visit; event parking, private lots or cafés may differ. If you are not sure of the way, see also our guide to getting to Trịnh Công Sơn Walking Street by motorbike.

Riding home safely after dark

  • Use your dipped headlight and keep a moderate speed, especially on Lạc Long Quân with its many small junctions.
  • Do not drink if you are riding; if you have, leave the bike at a safe attended spot and take a taxi.
  • Avoid the Âu Cơ service roads at night if you are not used to their one-way sections and truck traffic.
  • If your route home passes through the Old Quarter on Friday to Sunday evenings, check the vehicle restrictions in the Hoàn Kiếm area.

The plan at a glance

Time Stop What to do Parking note
15:00–15:30 (A) Trấn Quốc Pagoda, Thanh Niên road Short visit, lake views Only stop where allowed
16:15–18:30 (A) / 6:30–8:00 (B) Trịnh Công Sơn space, lotus ponds Stroll, events, photos Park once on the lane 612 Lạc Long Quân side
18:30–19:30 (A) / 8:00–8:45 (B) Nearby eatery Dinner or breakfast Venue parking
8:45–9:45 (B) Phủ Tây Hồ Visit, lakeside walk Park once, walk
19:30–20:00 (A) Ride home Lạc Long Quân – Thụy Khuê – Thanh Niên Lights on, ride slowly

Before you set off

  • Check local announcements about weekend events.
  • A licence valid for your bike, plus registration papers or your rental contract.
  • A helmet with the strap fastened and working lights.
  • Small cash for parking and snacks.
  • Water and sunscreen in summer; a compact rain poncho.
  • Modest clothing for pagodas and shrines.

Making the most of the visit

The best moments here are slow ones: the light changing over the lotus ponds, a performance drifting across the water on an event night, a quiet coffee on the lakeshore. Leave enough time between stops so you are never tempted to rush or to stop where you should not. If you are travelling with friends, agree on a meeting point at the parking area rather than waiting at the roadside, and if the weather turns, it is perfectly fine to shorten the loop and head straight back along Lạc Long Quân.

Photos and respect

The lotus ponds, the lakeshore and any evening performance make great subjects, but a little courtesy goes a long way. Ask before photographing stallholders, performers or worshippers up close, keep paths clear when you stop for a shot and never step into the ponds or onto fragile banks for a better angle. At pagodas and shrines, avoid flash during ceremonies and follow any signs about where photography is not allowed. Drones need permission in Hanoi, so leave yours at home unless you have checked the rules. Finally, take your rubbish with you: the area is small, and keeping it clean is part of what makes it pleasant for everyone.

Frequently asked questions

Afternoon or early morning?

A weekend late afternoon suits you if you want to catch an event (when one is held) and the sunset. Early morning suits lotus season, photography and avoiding crowds.

What if there is no event that weekend?

You can still stroll the lotus ponds and the West Lake shore and visit Trấn Quốc Pagoda or Phủ Tây Hồ. Treat the area as one stop on a lake loop rather than the only goal.

Where is the easiest place to park?

Usually on the lane 612 Lạc Long Quân side, at an attended ticketed point or at a café’s parking. Never park on the Âu Cơ service road.

Is half a day enough?

It is enough for the Trịnh Công Sơn area, the lotus ponds and one or two West Lake stops. For a full loop of the lake, allow a whole day.

Is it suitable with young children?

The early-morning or early-afternoon options are gentler for families. Always use a proper child helmet and consider a taxi if you will be out late.

Is the area inside the low-emission zone?

According to published information, the pilot from 1 July to 31 December 2026 applies only to areas 1 and 2 of Hoàn Kiếm ward; the Nhật Tân area is outside it.

In short: for a half-day motorbike visit to Trịnh Công Sơn Walking Street, choose a weekend late afternoon to catch any event or an early lotus-season morning for the ponds, and combine it with the West Lake shore, Trấn Quốc Pagoda or Phủ Tây Hồ. Check announcements before you go, park once per stop, never park on the Âu Cơ service roads and ride home early and safely.
